When is the best time to visit Morondava
You can visit it year-round, however if you want to explore more of the region then consider coming between April and November, during the drier season. To avoid lots of tourists, don’t come in July and August.
1. Avenue of Baobabs
The Avenue of Baobabs is around 40 minutes away from Morondava. The baobabs are illuminated at night. We would recommend to also visit during sunrise. You will be most likely the only one there, able to enjoy at your own pace. The sun rises on the right side while the sun sets on the left side, from the point where you arrive and look at the Avenue, but it still gets amazing colors and it rises between some baobabs in the distance. It’s more mystical than the sunset as there is usually a little bit of fog, the village awakens and locals are passing wrapped in their local “lambahoany” clothes carrying things on their heads.
2. Tsingy de Bemaraha
Morondava is the best gateway to Tsingy de Bemaraha, although not located right in the vicinity of the park, it is a good place to start the journey to the Tsingy stone forest. This is the most impressive site in Madagascar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a limestones forest which offers one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world! It takes 8 hours by car from Morondava to arrive and you will cross 2 rivers, Tsiribihina and Manambolo. The roads become impassable during the rainy season from November to May.
3. Belo sur Mer
From Morondava you can make a day tour (by boat or car) or go for a few days to Belo sur Mer and come back. About things to do in this fishing village you can read on our blog post here.
4. Kirindy Forest
Kirindy Forest is a private reserve, some 2 hours on a very bumpy road and it’s not to be confused with the Kirindy Mitea National Park south of Morondava (more detail on this blog-post). Here you can see lemurs and the endemic predator called fossa! The park is on the same road as the Avenue of Baobabs.
5. Beaches
Morondava is not the best place for a beach holiday, but if you happen to be there, 30 minutes from Morondava by tuk-tuk is the most beautiful beach that you will find around there. Kimony Beach is a long white sand beach where you can swim. Apart from some locals you won’t meet a single person. There is a nice resort close by called the Kimony Resort where you can stop to eat.
