I’m a beach lover, but not for getting cooked in the sun, rather for the vibe and the breeze. Unfortunately, this time in Durban I did get sunburned because the clouds played me around …. If ever in South Africa or Australia during summer (which is December to February) your sun cream  should be in your bag at all times. Walking in the sun without any moisturizer or any kind of sun protection on your skin can turn out really bad.

The Umhlanga beach is situated in the north of Durban. It has that cute South African click in its name. Ah, sorry, still cannot do clicks yet! Try some Trevor Noah comedy just to have a clue what I’m talking about!

This is the Umhlanga pier, which looks like the ribs of a massive mammal.

Durban has some amazing spots for surfing. The waves can get pretty massive, the water is blue and clear – just perfect for a ride!

Umhlanga lighthouse  is on the left from the pier. Not so far ago it was used in a campaign for raising awareness on AIDS.

This is one of the most beautiful beaches situated near an urban residential area. The promenade is perfect for a morning jog or a sunset walk!

Don’t miss the amazing uShaka Marine World, a bit to the south from Umhlanga lighthouse. The attraction park has a huge aquarium which was built inside several real shipwrecks. Great design, one of the best aquariums in the world!

They have Nemos, sharks, seals,  stingrays, seahorses, all kind of funny fish and marine creatures! It was really interesting!

From school kids to elderly, the aquarium wouldn’t leave anyone indifferent. At least 10-20 times you’d be wowed! The park tries to raise awareness on different issues such as recycling, environment protection, marine issues and other local and global hot topics.

Durban itself is also interesting from a cultural point of view given to the mixed population. There is a big Indian community in Durban which is already growing its 6-7th generation here, forming the largest Indian city outside of India. The younger Indian generations would already have that South African accent (no clicks though), but elderly would still understand and speak Indian languages.
